Selecting flooring for any room in the house can be a convoluted process, mainly because the range of products available is so huge. The whole business can also be complicated by the fact that there are usually two people that have to agree on the final choice. This is in addition to all of the practical considerations, such as, does it have to be warm; how easy is it to clean, etc., etc.? My personal opinion is that if you are looking for something that’s practical, durable and reasonably priced, vinyl flooring is a very good option to consider.
Here areeight reasons why vinyl flooring might be suitable for you:
- Wide choice of finishes: Nowadays vinyl flooringcomes in a surprisingly wide range of colors, patterns and textures, thanks to improvements in production technology. Some have been cleverly designed to replicate the look and feel of more expensive ornatural materials such as hardwood, stone and ceramic tiles.
- Long-lasting. Vinylis hard to beat when it comes to durability, which is why it has always been popular in public areas.Even the cheapest vinyl should last for around 10-15 years, provided it’s looked after. Thickness is key in helping vinyl withstand wear and tear for longer.
- Price. Vinyl is surprisingly affordable when compared to other types of flooring. The great thing is that you can achieve a great finish without a costly price tag, plus you’ll often get a manufacturer’s warranty into the bargain.
- Low maintenance. Unlike carpeting or untreated wood flooring, vinyl is easy to clean. All it requires is an occasional mopping. Spill something on the floor:just wipe it up and you’re good to go. There’s no need to worry about warping, chipping, liquid damage or staining.
- Easy on the feet. Vinyl feels quite soft and pliable underfoot, which makes it kinder and more comfortable to bare feet than harder surfaces with less ‘give’.
- Flexibility. No longer restricted to bathrooms and kitchens, vinyl is making a comeback in living and dining rooms, partly because it now available in a variety of formats, from high end tiles to more traditional sheet vinyl, which makes it suitable for almost any type of room.
- Fast and hassle-free to fit. Vinyl can be installed over most surfaces, including existing flooring, which saves a lot of time. It’s also easily cut to size and can fit even the oddest-shaped room.
- Easy to lay yourself.Cut, peel and stick technology makes vinylan easy optionfor DIY enthusiasts. You just need to check that surfaces are level, clean and dry before fitting.Test cement floors for excess moisture 72 hours in advance and user fillers to even out holes if necessary.
My other top installation tips:
- For the perfect fit, make a template by drawing the outline of the floor onto some strong paper. You can then use this to cut out the underlay and then the vinyl.
- For straight-edged seams, double cut the vinyl using a utility knife. Overlapping the edges will also give a nicer finish.
- Rent a staple gun to fix the underlay into place. Cheap plywood can be unreliable, resulting in surface defects. Instead, choose ¼ inch birch plywood and be sure to leave it on site for a few days to adjust to temperature and air moisture levels before installing.
- Use the right sized notched trowel – it’ll help you spreadthe adhesive more evenly and precisely.
- Use a silicone or latex caulk to seal the edges around bathtubs, toilet bases etc.
